Mental Health

Nearly half of Americans report that the coronavirus crisis has harmed their mental health, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of the 6.5 million non-elderly adults who suffer from serious mental health problems, 44% said they had seen a mental health professional in the past year. An estimated 11.2 million adults, or about one in four, suffer from severe mental illness, and an estimated 7.4 million suffer from depression. [Sources: 1, 9, 11]

Compared to adults without serious mental health problems, adults with severe mental health problems are more likely to be uninsured and not be able to afford mental health care or counselling. Young adults are already struggling with mental health problems, according to the CDC - health problems and the number of 25-year-olds with severe mental illness jumped from 2012 to 2017, spending less time than they used to interact with others in person, a situation that was only exacerbated by the pandemic. Doctors are also prone to burnout and can therefore suffer from mental health problems such as depression and drug use. It is also worrying that anxiety and mental illness exacerbate poor physical health. In an unprecedented period of uncertainty and fear, this is likely to be exacerbated by the high cost of health care and lack of access to care for the elderly. [Sources: 11]

The current shortage of mental health professionals is likely to be exacerbated by the COVID 19 pandemic. This is partly due to the existing mental illness of young people, which may exacerbate pandemics. School closures mean young people do not have access to adequate mental and physical health services such as counselling and medication. [Sources: 11]

If you or someone close shows signs of mental illness, discuss your concerns openly and honestly. If you have any signs or symptoms of mental illness, see a doctor or psychologist, such as a psychiatrist, social worker or psychiatrist. Search online to find out if your symptoms are specific to a particular mental illness or illness. The next time your family member sees a doctor and/or psychologist, discuss your behaviour with them and develop strategies for coping. [Sources: 6, 8]

The Canadian Mental Health Association promotes mental health and supports people with mental illness through collaborative research, education, advocacy, prevention and treatment. We also provide resources and recommendations to treat mental illness and substance abuse disorders as pandemics. Connect to navigate the mental health system for support and resources and access to free services that are accessible to all. If you or someone you know is going through a psychiatric or mental health crisis, you can call emergency services in your area 24 hours a day. If you know someone who has experienced or has experienced a psychiatric crisis in the last 24 hours, please know that 24 / 7 emergency services are available. [Sources: 5]

If you or a close person would like to speak to a medical or mental health professional, the following options are the best for them. If you are feeling particularly anxious or struggling with your mental health, it is fine for you to seek support from a mental health patient. Contact with those who are important to you helps you maintain good mental health after a long period of self-isolation. [Sources: 4, 7, 8]

Medicines play an important role in the treatment of mental illness, especially when the symptoms are severe and do not respond adequately to psychotherapy. Standard treatment for bipolar disorder is not recognized by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) or the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), but it is commonly used to treat patients with mental illness. Some of the therapies that have been shown to be effective in treating many mental disorders include family-oriented therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychotherapy. There are so many ways life takes its toll - and like cancer, diabetes and heart disease, mental illness is often physical, but also emotional and psychological. Physical health requires efforts to build and maintain physical health, but people with strong mental health are more likely to recover from adversity, trauma, and stress than physically healthy people who recover from illness or injury. As important as mental health is, we must work hard to ensure it is for ourselves and our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. [Sources: 3, 8]

No matter how common mental health problems are, many of us, despite our best efforts, do not make any effort to improve our situation. [Sources: 3]

Part of the problem, experts say, is that mental illness is treated much less in the US than physical illness. Partly this is because we treat mental illness less frequently than physical illness. Mental illness and other health problems are episodic, meaning there are ongoing signs and symptoms such as anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Mental health problems can become "mental illnesses" when persistent signs or symptoms impair our ability to function. This can take a toll on us, especially those who already live with illnesses such as anxiety and OCD, as well as those with other mental health problems. [Sources: 0, 1, 6, 7]
